Burnt Sugar: The Arkestra Chamber is the ultimate gumbo group. Each iteration of the Burnt Sugar live performance experience is completely unique. Burnt Sugar is a veritable, venerable, inevitable supergroup, an orchestra of severe proportions. Shapeshifted by Greg Tate, references may include at any moment: Sun Ra Arkestra, Parliament-Funkadelic, Bjork, Zappa, Hendrix, Butch Morris. Says ringleader Tate, 2008 has been a blowout busy year for Burnt Sugar--two sellout nights at 'The Kitchen' , an SRO performance at Paris' Son D'Hiver festival, a live film score presentation at Lincoln Center of legendary indie black film godfather Oscar Micheaux's 1927 silent feature 'Within Our Gates'. Recent gigs have also featured guest appearances by hometown heroes Vernon Reid and Maya Azucena alongside the ever-evolving Burnt Sugar massive which now includes 4 guitars, 4 horns, 4 vocals, 6 turtle doves and The Partridge Family hung in effigy from a pear tree. I've only begun to develop scores for the South Pacific core values in drumming and ceremony. Passing through my ethereal body, they left impressions that are peptic and potential crystalizations for this performance to yield. In this work entitled Render, I look deep within my water trine for a past and a recurring voice. Susana is the fuse for some of the combustion that Warren and I have shared through the years. This is the closest honor I can give to beacons like Sun Ra and others whose works speak fire and unconditional love united. ~ Pheeroan akLaff
Brooklyn Mime Troop is a collaboration between Brooklyn-based drummer-composer Pheeroan akLaff, New Zealand-born actress and writer Susana Lei'ataua and master percussionist Warren Smith, confronting the shadow and light at work in our 21st century ethos and stasis (or lack thereof) with the thunderous and the serene. Freshly formed from an extra rib of Kenny Wolleson's Himalayas big band, the members of the internationally infused ensemble Untyte have been marinating long enough: It's Untyte time! Traversing the apparent divide between spontaneity and composition, Untyte resurrects ancient Lithuanian polyphonic folk tunes that almost became extinct under the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. Untyte sing simple stories of boys and girls from neighboring towns, trees, birds, wheat and bread, woven into ecstatic three-voice rounds. Conducted by dynamic drummer Dalius Naujo, the band takes the simple melodies and trance rhythms for a flight into the parallel universe. http://www.myspace.com/untyte *****
